Nicole L. Fears Appointed to Lead New IAM Human Rights Department
IAM International President Brian Bryant has appointed IAM Special Representative Nicole L. Fears as the IAM’s new Human Rights Director.
As International President Bryant’s first appointment, the move marks the creation of a new department to focus on social and economic justice and how identity and lived experiences affect the IAM’s diverse membership.
With an impressive background in labor activism and a trailblazing journey within the IAM, Fears brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for human rights to her new role.
Fears began with the IAM in 1994 when she was hired as an ExpressJet Flight Attendant. Early on, she demonstrated her dedication to the principles of the IAM by being elected as a Shop Steward for IAM Local 2339C. Her commitment to the labor movement and her fellow workers led to her role as an Educator for her local lodge, where she played a pivotal role in educating and empowering her colleagues.
Fears made history by becoming the first Black woman elected President of Local 2339C in Ohio. This groundbreaking achievement highlighted her leadership skills and shattered barriers, paving the way for greater diversity and representation within the IAM.
Before becoming a Special Representative with the IAM Organizing Department, Fears was an Associate Organizer of the IAM Air Transport Department and Vice President of District 142. Nicole has led the Women’s Committee in Atlanta for the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and was recently named Labor Leader of the Month by the Atlanta-North Georgia Labor Council.
“I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Nicole L. Fears as the IAM’s new Human Rights Director,” said Bryant. “Nicole will bring her extensive experience, passion for justice, and commitment to equality to the forefront. In this pivotal role, she will play a crucial part in shaping IAM’s initiatives to champion human rights, ensuring that the organization remains at the forefront of promoting fairness, dignity, and equality for all. Nicole’s passion for empowering workers makes her an ideal leader for this vital role in our union.”
